Indevin Appoints David Roper as Group Winemaker

ndevin Group is pleased to announce the appointment of David Roper as Group Winemaker. With more than two decades of experience – most of it with the iconic Villa Maria brand – Roper steps into this role to lead Indevin’s winemaking team, driving innovation while upholding the company’s reputation for crafting exceptional New Zealand wines for all its brands.

Roper’s journey into winemaking was anything but conventional. Originally trained in medical microbiology, he made the switch to the wine industry in 2002, starting as a Cellar Hand at Villa Maria. Over the years, he has worked alongside some of New Zealand’s most respected winemakers, refining his experience across multiple varietals, wine styles, and brands.

“I’m incredibly thrilled to take on the role of Group Winemaker at Indevin,” says Roper. “We have an outstanding team of talented winemakers, all driven by a shared passion for creating wines with character and a true sense of place. With vineyards spanning across Marlborough, Hawkes Bay and Gisborne, we have an amazing opportunity to showcase the best of Aotearoa.”

Indevin Group is New Zealand’s largest wine company, with a portfolio that includes award-winning brands such as Villa Maria, Esk Valley, Vidal and Leftfield. Roper’s expertise and leadership will play a pivotal role in shaping the winemaking vision across the group.

Indevin Director of Winegrowing, Patrick Materman says, “David has been an integral part of our winemaking team for over 20 years, and we are delighted to see him step into this well-earned leadership position. His deep understanding of New Zealand’s wine industry, combined with his commitment to producing wines that resonate with consumers, will be instrumental as we continue to grow our brands in key global markets.”

Roper’s appointment marks an exciting chapter for Indevin as the company continues to reinforce its position as a leader in the New Zealand wine industry.
